One Dance for Wellness

Theresians danced their hearts out last September 27 and 29 during the Pakiglambigit 2012 with STC Campus Fit.

The Information Campaign/Corpcom 11 class of Mme. Lilu Alino organized a health and fitness campaign through exercise called “Campus Fit” with the theme: “Move for wellness and thrive for wholesome relationships.”
The theme conveys a message of flocking the students, faculty and staff, and school administration and encouraging them to move and exercise together for a healthier mind and body.

“Part of the information campaign class requirement is the actual planning and implementation of an identified problem or issue. This gives the students a chance to apply concepts and hone their skills in planning and execution, creative and production based on a real situation. In the process they reinforce values of unity, cooperation, hard work, determination, and resourcefulness. They identify strengths and weaknesses and be able to evaluate their work,” Mme. Alino said.

“Campus Fit not only served as a starting point for a healthier lifestyle for the whole institution, but it also paved the way to a more united Theresian community. Seeing my fellow Theresians dance and have fun together gives me more reasons to miss my alma mater once I graduate from college,” Deneb Batucan, one of the organizers of the campaign said.

Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance fitness work-out, is a fun, upbeat and popular exercise routine that was featured during the Campus Fit Opening last September 12, 2012 at the auditorium along with the College students.

Mme. Lita Quisumbing, a famous dance instructor for Hiphop, Jazz, Yoga and Zumba in Las Vegas and Cebu, was hired to teach and bust some unique dance moves with the students. She is also an alumna of STC.

When asked about the first time she taught Zumba in STC she answered: “I enjoyed every minute. The students’ energy and enthusiasm inspired me to give my all!”
Aside from the warm welcome of Zumba by the College department, Campus Fit also made its way to the Intramurals. The information campaign class held a one hour Zumba session at the sunken court on day one of Pakiglambigit 2012. Staff members, guests and students from the three departments gathered at the venue to dance with Mme. Quisumbing.

The fun didn’t stop on the last day of Pakiglambigit 2012 as high school and College students, and members of the faculty jived to the modern tunes as they followed Mme. Quisumbing and Veronica Enriquez with her daughter Rebecca Enriquez who both work at Holiday Gym Spa.

“The rain added to the fun,” said Jessica Anne Rubio, a 2nd year high school student.

The campaign was sponsored by Get Fit restaurant, STC and Globe Telecom. The last Zumba session was topped off by a raffle of globe tattoo broadbands.

Barkers’ Booth- Real Practice

Good music, games update, and entertainment give the 3-day Intramurals more fun and excitement. These boost up the sports fest and the visitors’ stay in the school.  But the people behind the speakers are not professionals. They are college students, aspiring to be radio DJ's in the future.

Speakers’ Academy (SPA) of the college department holds the responsibility of looking for a qualified student who will control the booth to doll up the music scene during Intramural days. Students need to go through a screening process and training before gripping the microphone and talking on air. But what does it take to become a barker? Apart from being a Theresian, a barker must be “someone who is confident, spontaneous, witty, able to speak well/properly, articulate and know the right things to say,” according to the standards of SPA.
Pauline Abaiz, a 3rd year MassCom student shares her experience on the barkers’ booth, “It is fun to be a barker. It is something one can be proud of. After all, your voice will be heard all over the campus. But it is also because of this that makes being a barker a responsibility. Since you will be heard by everyone, one must above all, think before you speak.” Abaiz is also a SPA member who helps in coaching qualified students to become a good barker. She is a consistent barker during the Intramurals.
Chosen barkers welcome the day, control and mash up the music, announce the games’ results, relay messages and inform the crowd of the inside activities. In other words, a barker is the school’s DJ during Intramurals. This helps the student to be more confident to speak on public. Also, one can practice controlling the technicalities, tone modulation, organization of thoughts to come up with upright, and at the same time perky statements.
“It’s a special and memorable learning experience.” says Zelina Rae Danao, president of SPA and a barker herself for a couple of Intramurals.
Not only the school gets to save from hiring a DJ but barkers’ booth gives the students a solid ground to practice their talent in technicalities and public speaking. Indeed, barkers’ booth is an amazing opportunity to train students in their way to connect to the public.

JEO Celebrates Sports

STC'S VISION MISSION; REVISED

Just as every individual needs an inspiration or dream to motivate them to become more than what they currently are and succeed in life, the same goes for an organization or institution – a vision-mission towards the ultimate goal.

St. Theresa’s College Cebu (STC) underwent an institutional renewal workshop last April 4, 5, and 6, 2011, and it sought to assess the current standing of the school, to identify facets for improvement, and to find concrete ways to move the school forward. One of the facets discussed was the institution’s vision-mission, as well as its core values. It was found out that the vision-mission was lengthy, which made it harder for people to memorize and internalize. It was then agreed that the school’s vision-mission must be changed into a simpler, comprehensive, timely, and effective tool in helping STC soar high.

The process of renewing our school’s vision-mission statement was championed by Mme. Dulce Baricuatro and Sr. Ma. Purisima Pe, ICM. They both headed the innovation of the vision-mission.

“The vision-mission went through a long process before it became what it is now. There was a ‘Think Tank’ group represented by the faculty of the three departments and other members of the school community,” says Mme. Baricuatro.

She added that there are few things that were considered by the workforce team for the vision-mission in order to create the new statement compelling the reputation of the school, the future graduates, and the community.

“There’s nothing wrong with the STC vision-mission before, but part of the institutional renewal and assessment is clarifying the goals of the school in how they honor and promote it, and so we made changes to the vision-mission to make it more appropriate and shorter,” shared Mme. Lilu AliƱo, the Institutional Planning Officer.

After more than a year of constant deliberation and consultation with the school community, the final copy of the vision-mission was done to everyone’s approval. Copies of the revised vision-mission were released to the students last June 2012.
Orientations where given to the whole student body and their parents for them to understand the message that the revised vision-mission statements seek to convey.

“The purpose of the vision-mission really is this – to transform the school in such a way that it can provide a transformative education at the service to the country and the Church, that as an institution we grow as persons, become better children of God and become happy and fulfilled.” Mme. Baricuatro said.

The goal is to live out the vision-mission to the fullest and realize the transformation of the school. This will be done through communicating and promoting the vision-mission, forming leaders, developing our spirituality and recognizing the vision-mission as something that is an inextricable part of the students’ lives. It is not enough to speak about change and transformation. It must be lived out by oneself.
